Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen

Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen

Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen is a mix of theme park, concert venue, attractive gardens and restaurants. It tries to cater for all ages, so you’ll find a little bit of everything here and certainly there’s a real mix of people you see at the park.

For lovers of thrill rides, there’s the Dragon Rollercoaster, and the world’s tallest carousel, the Starflyer but the highlight for us the Mountain Coaster which is the world’s oldest wooden roller coaster. It was built in Sweden and was installed at Tivoli in 1915. It’s amazing to think that at 100 years old, this coaster is still great to ride today and is still entertaining and exciting.

If thrill rides aren’t your thing, you could visit the aquarium – the longest in Denmark or take the road train around the footpaths. There are live shows each day too on the various stages around the park. Posted around Tivoli you’ll find notice boards with the various performances you can see. On some days there are more free shows than others and you can check the day’s shows before you enter at the main entrance. You’ll need to buy a ticket for concerts in the Concert Hall and performances are often booked in advance.

Also, look out for the parade of the Boys Guard complete with coach and horses which is one of the most famous sights in Tivoli Gardens.

There are plenty of restaurants around Tivoli and some also have entrances on the outside too. For the best value, try Wagamama, Italia or the Hard Rock Cafe, but if you prefer traditional Danish cuisine most of the other restaurants will cater for you

One of the highlights for us was to return to Tivoli at night when there’s a real fun atmosphere and the lights on the rides and in the gardens look lovely.

Tivoli’s opening hours vary depending on the time of year, but in the warmer months the park mostly opens at 11am and closes around 11pm. Adult admission is typically 130 DKK and a multi ride ticket is around 230 DKK. Children under 3 years of age are free (2019 prices). You can see the latest prices and buy in advance to avoid the queues here:
