Summit One Vanderbilt

There are several skyline viewing galleries in New York now, but this is one of the newest. It occupies 3 floors of a tower block next to Grand Central Terminus and offers an ‘arty’ approach as you follow the one way system around.

The first thing to be aware of if you’re planning to visit is that tickets sell fast and you will need to book in advance to secure entry, especially at peak times. There is then a queuing system for the elevators involving a security check and distribution of shoe covers and sunglasses. The reason for this is that the attraction is covered in mirrors – floor, ceiling and walls and can be a little disorientating as a result. The sunglasses help with this and the shoe covers protect the shiny floor. Even the elevators themselves have an audio visual show is you’re heading upwards. Then the doors open onto the most incredible view of New York.

Each area has different theme as you move from room to room. Apart from the double height mirrored gallery, there is a room with an artwork in the middle, an open air section, a restaurant and a room packed with inflatable mirrored balloons. This prove to be quite a bottle-neck on our visit and we had to queue to get in. Our 8 year old thought it was amazing though – the highlight of his entire trip to New York.

Overall we thought Summit One Vanderbilt was an enjoyable experience with a new twist on an old idea. This isn’t just a viewing deck, it offers a new way to be wowed by views of the city. We liked that you have views all the way around the tower and over 3 floors. The open air section was particularly good, although you are still looking through a glass wall, rather than truly open-air with a balcony like the nearby Top of The Rock gallery. The mirrored effect is a bit gimmicky and won’t be for everyone.

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is generally open from 9am to midnight every day, except for Tuesdays when it is closed. Tickets start at $47 per person rising during sunset (2025 prices). There are other ticket options which allow access to a glass elevator and skip the line options.
